A time when I felt unloved

The first and also the last time when I felt unloved was when I was going to Primary One. In that days, the schools in my hometown were not as good as the schools in the neighbour city. In order to ensure me to be educated, my parents sent me to a school which was quite far away from my home and I could only go home once a month. I was extremely unwilling to go to that school. However, my parents ingnored what I thought. They sent me there and just left me there for one month. During the month, I could only contact them on phone. I felt unloved and I felt that they did not care about me anymore because they never said that they would come to my school to see me when I told them I was lonely.

Day by Day, I have grown up and I could understand why me parents sent me to the boarding school ------- because they wanted to to be an independent person so that I can take care of myself when they were not with me. That is not because they not love me anymore.

Caught in a storm

In the early morning, I took a bus to school. Suddenly, I heard an earsplitting crack, following by a heavy shower of rain. It did not affect me since I was in the bus. However, after 5 minutes, I alighted.

Needless to say, the rain did not stop. The way from the bus stop to my school is not covered by anything so I took out my umbrella. At the same time, I hoped the umbrella could protect me to be "attacked" by the storm and rain. While I was heading to school in a chaos of wind, water and noise, there was a blinding flash as lightning hammered down on the floor. Lightning is terrible as it always "divides" the sky into two in a second. I was scared I would be "divided" into two like the sky. By thinking of this, my body was shivering violently. Gradually, the rain became heavier and the umbrella became useless as the rain started to drop on my body, drop in my shoes. I soaked as if I wore my clothes to swim in a swimming pool just now.

Fortunately, my school was not far away from the bus stop. Thus, I reached school within five minutes. It is horrible to catch in a storm.

PROPOSAL TO PULAU UBIN

Chong Boon Secondary School
2 Ang Mo Kio Street 44
Singapore 569250

25 July 2009

Mr Lee Hock Thiam
The director
Urban Re-development Authority
Jurong West
Singapore 359625

Dear Mr Lee

PROPOSAL TO PULAU UBIN

As the President of the Green Plan 2012 Club in my school. I have some advise for you to develop Pulau Ubin. I would like to tell you the proposal from some residents.

Firstly, Mr Mohamad Ismail Bin Adam (aged 74, Headman of the island), said that a new clinic and a school for the locals is needed there since his grandchildren have to take a bumboat to the mainland to the clinic and school there. It is very inconvenient.

Secondly, Madam Chan Ah Mui (aged 45, former owner of a kiosk for bicycle rental), proposed that there should have a good bus service, roads and infrastructure. As the same time, make the places around there accessible. She has a desire for cycling tracks and nature trails.

Thirdly, Mr Chandran Mohan (aged 20, polytechnic student), was considering to transform Ubin into a 21st century New Town and enjoying the best of both worlds. Besides, he suggested to have some shopping facilities and nature at their doorstep. It is a relaxed way of life.

Fourthly, Mrs Tan Li Lin (aged 32, housewife and part time hawker assistant), requested reliable water supply as she has hoped to start a coffee stall. Due to a lot of campers and trippers, good water supply is very important.

Last but not least, Melvin Koh (aged 16, ‘O’ level student), analysed that it may need to destroy the natural beauty of the island. However, do preserve Chek Jawa, the pride of Pulau Ubin, as a nature reserve.

After reading the advise above, Are there any ideas come out of your mind that how to develop Pulau Ubin as a satisfactory and impressive place for everyone? If have, please implement without hesitation.

Your faithfully
Nicole Tang
The president of the Green Plan 2012 Club

Tsunami disaster in Indonesia

An earthquake measuring 9.0 magnitudes struck the western end of Indonesia's Sumatra Island on December 26th 2004.

The earthquake was caused by subducion and triggered a series of devastating tsunami along the coasts of most landmasses bordering the India Ocean, killing nearly 230,000 people in eleven countries, and inundating coastal communities with waves up to 30 metres high. It was one of the deadliest natural disasters in recorded history. Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, and Thailand were the hardest hit.

This earthquake unleashed a series of tsunami Sunday that crashed into coastal towns, fishing villages and tourist resorts from Sri Lanka to India, Thailand and Malaysia, killing more than 13,000 people in at least nine countries and leaving thousands missing. This earthquake was also flattening buildings and sending a wall of water higher than the tops of coconut palms into the towns and villages in the province of Aceh.

With a magnitude of between 9.1 and 9.3, it is the second largest earthquake ever recorded on a seismographc. This earthquake had the longest duration of faulting ever observed, between 8.3 and 10 minutes. It caused the entire planet to vibrate as much as 1 cm (0.4 inches) and triggered other earthquakes as far away as Alaska.

The plight of the many affected people and countries prompted a widespread humanitarian response. In all, the worldwide community donated more than $7 billion in humanitarian aid.
